Premier Plastics - We Make Plastic Look Fantastic

Premier Plastics are the plastic extrusion solution company. If it's made from plastic, they can make it.

For example, the colourful plastic strip doors you walk through at the local milk bar, your garden hose and the little plastic disc located in the top of your soft drink lid, are all manufactured by Premier Plastics.

Located in Campbellfield. Premier Plastics was established in the mid 1960's and specialises in manufacturing custom plastic extrusions and doors to a wide range of Australian industries.

Company Director, Ken Girdlestone, says there are two parts to their business.

"The plastic extrusion side of the business makes up 75 per cent of our turnover, with 14 plastic extruders producing hoses, tubes, profiles and a range of custom products for varied applications. The customer comes to us with a product and we provide a solution by cutting a dye and then manufacturing the product for them. There really is no limit to what we can deliver.

"We also manufacture a complete range of plastic doors, including plastic strip doors, swing-flex doors and rapid auto-roller doors," he said.

With the flexibility to custom-make their products, the company has been proactive in moving with industry trends and looking at growth markets, such as water saving products.

"The business has been growing at 20 per cent per annum for the past five years by targeting niche markets and import replacements. One growth product in particular is 'Leeaky Hose', a micro-porous hose we manufacture from Australian recycled rubber tyres, used in sub-surface irrigation which reduces water use by up to 75 per cent.

"Our biggest turn-over product is the RL3000 rapid auto-roller door, of which we will manufacture a minimum of 50 to 60 this year," Mr Girdlestone said.

The proudly 100 per cent Australian owned and operated business moved into its current Campbellfield location in 1991 and has experienced several benefits by being located in Hume City.

"Our current site is three times larger than our previous facility and the location is nice and close to major roadways and the airport. The other reason campbellfield has been great for our business is the access to skilled labour," Mr Girdlestone said

With a strategic growth plan in place, the company of 30 full-time staff is well-positioned, intending to expand each side of its business, while also entertaining the idea of exporting into overseas markets.

"Our plan is to continue to grow the business at the rate we have been over the past five years. We are currently expanding our door product range, while also looking to acquire smaller businesses that fit our business strategy.

"We have done a small amount of exporting in the past and it is something we will continue to consider in the future," Mr Girdlestone said.
